NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, searches the world to work directly with the finest artisan designers. Crocheting bands of red and cream, Diana Abugattas creates a warm wool scarf. She spins the wool by hand and dyes it using ancestral techniques. The design is a showcase for the fiber's fascinating rustic textures. Artisan Info: Diana Abugattas was born January 20, 1960, in Lima. From a very early age she spent time amid fabrics ? she practically learned to crawl in her parents' clothing workshop. "It was there that my liking for designing in cloth began," she recalls. "When I was a teen, I was fascinated by the idea of studying hotel administration, and I eventually did. I worked in that field for six years, until I got married and had my first baby. I no longer had time for hotel work, so I took up the handicrafts and design I'd always had inside but had never developed. "At first I worked in ceramics. Then, together with my sister, I had the opportunity to design backpacks for children and we are still doing this today. But I'm never at peace ? I'm always looking for new designs and better techniques. "My art is my life. Every single morning when I first wake up, I think, 'What am I going to create today?' To find just the right fabric and do with it what I want for today's modern woman? my designs come from Peruvian hands. They are lovingly made for you to use."Women
